Should You Join The Temple?
The occult scene in Britain today is in an unparalleled situation in its long and varied history. Three factors have come together. Firstly the spread of genuine mass communication i.e. millions of people can simultaneously communicate with millions of others via the internet, as opposed to millions of people receiving their information through a handful of media outlets. Secondly the mass disillusion with the establishment (be it political or religious) has created millions of spiritual searchers looking for answers to life's big questions in previously obscure and little trodden paths. Thirdly the lessening of the grip of establishment dogmas has led to a relatively liberal atmosphere, where dissidents can seek each other out and meet more or less openly.
These three factors have probably contributed to you coming to our website and reading this page. If so, welcome! I hope you are finding it an interesting experience.
The choice of occult groups has never been wider. New groups are coming into being, splitting and merging and dying all the time. So if you feel that it's right for you to join a group, should you join this one? Should you join the Temple of Set?
You may think it odd, but there are reasons why you should not join as well. We don't actively seek out members. We don't just allow anyone in. In fact more are turned away than are allowed in. You don't just fill in a form and send off a cheque. You can't collect our membership and hold memberships of other groups at the same time (This isn't strictly true at first - I° members can do this, but you might find the other groups rejecting you once they find out). We don't humour people; if your party piece is to waffle on about how you were a handmaiden of Isis or a Native American shaman in a previous life you can expect some tough questions from us, we won't humour you or blindly believe you like so many in the occult subculture would.
Most of all, we practice black magic. An art and science that is scary to many non-occult people (and quite a few occult people too). We work with a being that has many names, but is known as the Prince of Darkness. You might know him as Set, Odin, Lucifer, Satan or any number of names. Scary things do happen when you practice black magic; often it doesn't make your life easier (like it does in the movies) but presents new challenges as old ones are solved.
So why should you join us? Well if you're serious about learning what magic is. If you really believe that there is more to life than deciding which celebrity to live your life through, or which designer label to wear, we can help you. If you believe that conformity for its own sake is one of the worst things a person can do. If you believe that the elevation of mediocrity to be the highest virtue by modern society is a bad thing, then join us in our struggle against these trends. If you believe that you can bring something new to us, then show us what you have to offer. Learning is a two way process after all.
Above all, if you identify with the struggle of the Prince of Darkness, to forge a world of beauty, knowledge and truth against the forces of conformity, herd mentality and stasis.
